Eliminating Lime Sludge Disposal at New Smyrna Beach WTP Testing and Evaluation of ACTINA™ Pellet Softening

Tuesday, March 23, 2021 11:00am - 12:00pm EDT
Host: WEF Buyers Guide
By: Harold E. Schmidt, Jr, PE, BCEE, South Wastewater Practice Director, Stantec; Harrison Fowler, Product Developer, Veolia Water Technologies; and Thomas West, Director of Water Resources at Utilities Commission, City of New Smyrna Beach

The City of New Smyrna Beach, FL operates a ground water softening plant. The New Smyrna Beach Water Treatment Plant (WTP) currently uses conventional lime softening followed by filtration. The sludge produced at the plant is sent to a pit for temporary storage followed by off-site hauling for disposal. There is concern that landfilling the WTP’s lime sludge will not be a long term option therefore the City of New Smyrna Beach is looking into alternative treatment options that will eliminate the need for lime sludge disposal. Veolia’s ACTINA™ pellet softening process was pilot tested at the New Smyrna Beach WTP in the fall of 2020. A brief history of the New Smyrna Beach Facility will be discussed, along with the results from the pilot testing and the subsequent full-scale evaluation.
